Doorknob Therapy

Can we talk about your doors? What I mean is, let’s talk about the hardware that they wear.  Hardware refers to any of the items that are attached to a door or a drawer to enhance its functionality or appearance. Given that hardware is the touchpoint for entering a home or another room, it’s a wonder that it’s not given more consideration by homeowners as a design element.

Hardware can go a long way towards making even ordinary doors look special or bringing special effects to a room. Think of it as jewelry or an accessory that transforms a really simple outfit. Most people choose hardware for the way it looks, but the way it functions is important, too. The way your hand wraps around solid hardware as you turn the knob or push the lever can feel like a welcoming handshake to your visitors. Whether modern or traditional in style, levers are a good choice if you have less hand dexterity or need to carry a lot of items.

Finally, there’s your choice of finish.  There’s a wide array of options, from highly polished chrome to antique brass. It wasn’t too long ago that brass was in fashion, before it was replaced by silver – only to see a resurgence of brass, as warm metals have shown renewed popularity in recent years. We’re seeing a lot more gold accents added throughout the home, even in the kitchen.

For something totally unique, we installed a double handle set reclaimed from a long-established restaurant into a client’s home for their double-door entry closet. It transformed the way they feel about their entryway.

Whatever style or finish you choose, it’s worth taking the time to consider hardware as a fresh design element to dress your doors.
